Prayer:
Lord Jesus, we thank You for Your promise to return. Help us to live each day in light of eternity, pursuing holiness and boldly sharing Your Gospel. Keep us alert and faithful, not distracted by the temporary things of this world. Give us courage to face persecution if it comes, and fill us with hope as we await Your glorious return. May we be found ready when You come. In Your name we pray, Amen.
Staying Alert: Living with Awareness in Light of Christ's Return
What would you do if you knew today was your last day on earth? Would you waste time scrolling through social media or worrying about tomorrow's plans? Or would you spend precious moments with loved ones, make amends, and seek deeper meaning in life? This question isn't just hypothetical - it's at the heart of how we should approach each day as followers of Christ.
In Mark 13, Jesus paints a vivid picture of His return and the end times. While the details may seem unsettling, His message is ultimately one of hope and urgency. As we explore this passage, let's consider how we can live "on alert" - ready for Christ's return while faithfully pursuing His mission here and now.
The Temple's Destruction: A Lesson in Impermanence
Jesus and His disciples were admiring the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem when He made a shocking statement: "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down" (Mark 13:2). The disciples were stunned. How could their beloved Temple - the center of Jewish worship and God's presence - be destroyed?
This moment teaches us a crucial lesson: everything in this world is temporary. No matter how strong, beautiful, or secure something seems, if it belongs to this world, it won't last. It's easy to put our trust in things like careers, health, finances, or relationships. But Jesus reminds us that He alone is eternal and worthy of our ultimate trust.
Signs of the End: Wars, Disasters, and Persecution
As Jesus continued teaching on the Mount of Olives, He outlined several signs that would precede His return:
1. False messiahs: "Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many" (Mark 13:6).
2. Wars and disasters: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines" (Mark 13:8).
3. Persecution: "You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and Kings as witnesses to them" (Mark 13:9).
These signs may sound familiar - we see similar events in our world today. But Jesus tells us not to be alarmed. These things are like birth pains - intensifying as we move closer to His return. Through it all, we're called to stand firm in our faith and continue sharing the Gospel.
The Promise of Christ's Return
In the midst of describing cosmic chaos and global upheaval, Jesus gives us this incredible promise: "At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory" (Mark 13:26). This isn't a quiet, subtle return - it will be unmistakable and glorious.
For believers, this is the moment we've been waiting for. While others may panic, we can rejoice, knowing our redemption is at hand. Jesus will gather His people from every corner of the earth, fulfilling His promise to return for us.
Staying Ready, Not Distracted
How do we live in light of Christ's return? Jesus gives us clear instructions: "Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come" (Mark 13:33). He compares it to recognizing the signs of changing seasons - we should be aware of the indicators that His return is drawing near.
But Jesus also makes it clear that no one knows the exact day or hour of His return - not even Him! This should prevent us from obsessing over end-times predictions and instead focus on being prepared at all times.
Here are three ways we can stay ready:
1. Pursue holiness: Live a life that reflects Christ's character through daily surrender to Him.
2. Be bold in sharing the Gospel: We are Christ's ambassadors, called to share the good news of salvation.
3. Stay faithful in our daily walk: Consistently spend time in God's Word, prayer, and obedience.
Life Application: Living with Urgency
As we conclude, let's return to our opening question: How would you live if you knew today was your last? While we don't know when Christ will return, we can approach each day with that same sense of urgency and purpose. Here are some practical steps:
1. Evaluate your priorities: Do they align with God's kingdom purposes?
2. Reconcile broken relationships: Don't let pride or fear keep you from making amends.
3. Share your faith: Who in your life needs to hear about Jesus? Don't wait to tell them.
4. Serve others: Look for opportunities to show Christ's love in tangible ways.
5. Cultivate a longing for Christ's return: Let this hope shape your daily choices and perspective.
Remember, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away" (Mark 13:31). Let's build our lives on the eternal foundation of Christ and His Word, living each day as if it could be our last - or the day of His glorious return.
