Friday, December 29 – Luke 2:1-7

Dec 28, 2023

Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all the people were on their way to register for the census, each to his own city. Now Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was betrothed to him, and was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

How do you react when something inconvenient happens? Many of us quickly move into frustration or anger. We get irritated by traffic, the mess the kids make, or a mishap at work. We can only imagine what Mary and Joseph must have felt as the birth of Jesus was imminent, but nothing was working out conveniently or smoothly. They had to travel, find a place to have the baby, and work with what was available to care for their new child. When God calls us to do something, we often expect smooth sailing along the way. After all, won’t God open the doors He calls us to walk through? We trust Him as long as it feels natural and convenient to us. But when things don’t go as we expect, we may want to cry out, “Why God? I was trying to follow you!” This frustration is natural but if we are not careful, instead of being surrendered to God, we turn our focus to ourselves and the situation. We begin to depend on our strength instead of His.

As you look at the year to come and make plans for how you want to serve the Lord, seek to make plans with open hands, trusting Him with the outcome. We don’t know what curveballs or inconveniences we will encounter, but we can be sure of His ongoing presence in our lives and His faithfulness to do what He has promised.

  • How do you respond when faced with unexpected obstacles?
  • Why do we struggle to surrender our inconveniences to God?
  • Pray and ask God to equip you for the year to come, not by preparing you for every obstacle but by growing you in dependence on Him in all things.
