Friday, February 2 – Romans 12:1

Feb 1, 2024

Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

A good resume is full of credentials, achievements, awards, and references of people who will commend your work ethic and character. It tells the story of a hardworking person who is qualified and equipped to do the job he or she is applying for. Most of us have value hard work and achievement to get to where we want to go in life. That way of thinking can make us resistant to passages like we are reading today that challenge us toward surrender and sacrifice.

In most areas, we are focused on the things we are doing and our achievements, but surrender requires recognizing our lack of achievements before God. We realize we have nothing to bring to the table. We come in humility instead of pride. This is difficult, but in this we find true worship. It is in this acceptance of our lowly state that we see God work. Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Christ followers’ lives are no longer about what we can do but what Christ has done. We have a new identity and an eternal purpose when we live in surrender to Him. You can live changed in this reality.

  • Who would you say lives surrendered to God? What is different about their lives?
  • What is difficult for you about surrendering to God?
  • Seek to surrender your life before God in prayer. Ask Him for help in the many areas where this is difficult.
