Friday, January 19 – Matthew 15:10
After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, “Hear and understand!”
Have you ever tried to talk to someone while they were doing something else? What got lost in translation? We often describe these moments as words going in one ear and out the other. This indicates a skipped step of listening and understanding. This struggle is common to us all. Even in our spiritual walk, we struggle to hear God and let His words penetrate our hearts. We even struggle to apply the Scriptures we have memorized.
What would it look like to hear and understand God’s Word every day? What things would change in our lives? When we come to study God’s Word, we are often preoccupied with other things, making it hard to hear Him. Jesus’s words called the attention of the crowd; they were an appeal to not just let the message go in one ear out the other. The same is necessary for us today. It is time to hear and understand. It is time to put away distractions and give God our full attention. Let us all come before God in the manner of Psalm 95:6, “Come, let’s worship and bow down, let’s kneel before the Lord our Maker.”
- What are some distractions that keep you from hearing and understanding God?
- What does it look like to give God your full attention?
- Pray and give God your full attention asking Him to help you understand His Word.
