Friday, January 27 – Matthew 4:4

But He answered and said, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’”

All people learn the difference between needs and wants, but the line is not always clear. For an infant, nearly everything is a need—there is not much space or capacity for wants. Over time, the capacity for wants and needs grows but our discernment between the two is not always clear. You hear children make the plea, “But I want it!” to justify the reason they should receive something when they have been told no. Even as adults, we struggle to tell the difference between wants and needs. With access to nearly anything we could want, we fulfill our desires faster than we discern between a need and a want.

As Jesus was tempted, He felt real hunger and the weariness that comes with it, yet it did not cloud His perspective on His greater need for God’s Word. Confronted by Satan, Jesus needed God’s Word to handle the attacks that came His way more than He needed a full belly. So often our need is the same—we need God’s Word more than the escape of TV or scrolling on our phones. Too often we starve ourselves from the Word because other things in life come to the forefront. Like Jesus, seek eyes to see beyond the surface to get to the heart of the matter. We need to be filled up by God and transformed into His likeness through His Word.

  • What are some things that distract you from being in God’s Word?
  • How can you remind yourself daily of your need for God’s Word?
  • Pray and ask God for discernment to see your true need for Him and His Word.
