Friday, July 21 – Acts 20:32

Jul 20, 2023

“And now I entrust you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”

When acting as a teacher, it is often difficult to let go and turn the skill over to the one learning. It takes a long process of instruction and oversight to get to the point that a student is ready to apply the principles he or she has been taught in the real world. Regardless of how well we teach or how diligently we pour into others, we must do as Paul says and entrust them to God and to the word of His grace. The question is, are we preparing those who learn from us for that point? Are we preparing them for the day we will not be with them to walk them through the life of faith or are we “micro-discipling” them at every step, always telling them what we would do?

Even as deeply personal as this journey had been for Paul, he knew only God and His word could build up and give inheritance. When we disciple others, we are simply pointing them to the work God has done in us and how He can work through them also. Ephesians 2:10 says, “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” We can entrust those we disciple to God because we know, ultimately, they are His workmanship. If they are following Jesus, His Spirit is alive in them and will direct them long after we are gone.

  • Who have you discipled? What did you learn through teaching others?
  • What is difficult about entrusting others to God as Paul did?
  • Pray and ask God to cultivate in you a desire to entrust those close to you to Him.
