Train up a child in the way he should go,

Even when he grows older he will not abandon it.

Have you ever been told not to do something only to wonder later why that instruction was given? For some of us, just being told us not to do something makes us want to do it even more. We want to test the rules out for ourselves. Often in parenting, we focus on discipline and the right and wrong in which we want to guide our children. We get frustrated when they don’t listen or seem to rebel against the instructions we’ve given them. When we hit walls like this, we can forget that training our children in the way they should go is more than lessons in right or wrong, proper etiquette, or even taking them to church.

If you are a follower of Jesus, training your children in the way they should go means teaching them the grace and mercy of God. It means using moments of sin and brokenness as opportunities to point them to the ultimate Healer and Redeemer, Jesus. It means practicing repentance when we allow our flesh to lead our parenting. As those who have been forgiven and restored to God, He has given us much more to train our children in than just church attendance and a list of dos and don’ts. We have opportunity to teach the next generation the joy it is to be God’s and about the offer of redemption they have in Him. Sometimes this is done through big, extravagant moments, but often it’s done in the ordinary moments of each day.

  • If you are a parent, where are you struggling with your children currently?
  • What are some lessons that have guided your faith walk through the years?
  • Pray and ask God to help you train your children (or your spiritual children) in the way they should go.
