Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary.

Have you ever been motivated by a reward you anticipated? When we know there is a reward to look forward to, we often have a different mindset about our work. When we hit the hard moments and we want to quit, we think about the reward and remind ourselves the hard work will be worth it. Serving others can feel depleting, especially when we feel like it is not making any difference in the long run. However, the reward of a life of service as a follower of Christ is different than we expect. The reward is in how others see God in our love, even if they never recognize us for anything we have done. The reward is in the ways our hearts are molded further into God’s image and the life of love and sacrifice He displayed for us. Are these not valuable rewards? One day in heaven, we will reap the harvest of seeing how all the pieces came together, learning who came to know Jesus through our lives and how each action gave Him glory.

Until then, we can trust the work that our heavenly Father is doing as He shows us a better way to live than for our own interests, seeking a life of wealth and status. He has promised that good will come as we follow Him and love and serve others. The reward of a life with Him by His Spirit can be the motivator that keeps us pressing on in good each day.

  • What are some of the largest obstacles you encounter when trying to live a life of service?
  • What typically motivates you to serve others? How has that affected the way you serve?
  • Pray and ask God to keep your eyes fixed on Him so you will not grow weary in service.
