Friday, September 15 – Joshua 5:13-15

Sep 14, 2023

Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, he raised his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” He said, “No; rather I have come now as captain of the army of the Lord.” And Joshua fell on his face to the ground, and bowed down, and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his servant?” And the captain of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

When have you been startled by the appearance of another person? Often our reactions are completely different than if we expected someone to approach us. We have a way of mentally preparing ourselves for our encounters with people. We consider what we will say or how we will conduct ourselves. When we are caught off guard, we are much more likely to give a reaction that represents what is going on in our hearts, for better or worse. Joshua was caught off guard by the angel of the Lord. He didn’t know at first if the angel was an enemy or a friend. Yet his heart was revealed—he was committed to God and His call even when it came differently than he expected.

God often gives us opportunities to live out our faith differently than we expect. We have opportunities all around us to display His heart to others in moments when we are caught off guard. We have the opportunity to show God’s love when a customer is chewing us out. We can show His patience when a teenager begins to test our boundaries. We have the opportunity to share His gentleness when our toddler is running out of control. Are we eager and ready to submit to God in the moments we are caught off guard? Are we willing to set our emotions and fears aside and surrender to God’s direction? Our reactions reveal our hearts more than we would like to admit. Following Jesus is more than being ready to worship on Sunday mornings or even read the Word and pray on our own. It is about constant submission to Him, even in unexpected moments.

  • What is your typical response when you are caught off guard in a moment?
  • When have you followed God even when it looked different than you expected?
  • Pray and ask God to mold your heart to look like His so you can glorify Him even in the moments you are caught off guard.
