Friday, September 8 – Joshua 4:19-24

Sep 7, 2023

Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth of the first month and camped at Gilgal, on the eastern edge of Jericho. As for those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set them up at Gilgal. And he said to the sons of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’ then you shall inform your children, saying, ‘Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as the Lord your God had done to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed; so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, so that you may fear the Lord your God forever.”

When giving advice to others, we often share a story of past experience as an answer. We do this because these stories give an example of the principle or advice we want to get across. Stories often point to a deeper truth and give a framework for understanding what is being communicated. There was a great story behind the stones the Israelites set up as a marker, but there was also a reminder that applied across all generations: The stones spoke to the greatness of God.

When we share about things going on in our lives, do we regularly share about how God is at work? It is important to give God His place at the center of our story because it shares a truth that applies across all generations. He is the Author and the Sustainer of life, and our lives should be submitted to Him, recognizing Him as Lord over all. If we want to have these stories to share, we need to have our eyes open and ready to see Him as the center of our story. Taking credit for our successes will only go so far but seeing God’s work in our lives will speak a testimony across generations.

  • How do you typically share about yourself? Who is at the center?
  • Who can you share your testimony with so that they may follow Jesus too?
  • Pray and ask God for eyes to see Him at the center of your story.
