Monday, April 3 – John 12:1-3

Apr 2, 2023

Therefore, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they made Him a dinner there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. Mary then took a pound of very expensive perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

For some, Easter is a busy time of serving our families; for others, it is a time to spend time in the Word and fasting to be with Jesus; and for others, it is a day that completely catches us off guard at its arrival. Unlike Christmas, we often don’t take much time to prepare for Easter. We may prepare a meal or event, but we are not consumed with preparation of gifts and holiday celebrations in the same way. If we are not careful, Easter can just feel like a special Sunday to mark the beginning of Spring, and we will completely miss the value of this joyful season.

In a house full of people, hosting, serving, and fellowship, Mary saw something no one else did. She saw an opportunity to publicly lavish her love on Jesus as His servant. For others in the room, this was just a moment to be together for the Passover, but for Mary, there was something sacred about showing devotion to Jesus in this moment. She had seen and interacted with Jesus before, but instead of becoming casual and familiar with Him, she cherished His presence even more. Just because you have celebrated Easter for many years doesn’t lessen the value of this occasion. Like Mary, you can recognize Jesus as King over your life in a new and sacred way. You can use this moment as a prompting to show your commitment to Him in a new way instead of getting caught in the same familiar routine. Don’t miss the opportunity.

  • When was a time you recognized the worth of Jesus? What did you do in response?
  • What are some traditions you have during the Easter season?
  • Pray and ask God to open your eyes to His awe-inspiring beauty so that you may worship Him like Mary.
