Monday, January 16 – John 8:31-32

Jan 15, 2023

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Sometimes knowing what to do in a situation or how to react in a godly way is hard. We ask ourselves “What would Jesus do?” but that can be a tough question to answer when we don’t have Him physically standing next to us. Reading today’s passage, we receive encouragement for those moments in life. If we continue in God’s Word, we are living as Jesus’s disciples. It is as simple as that! This truth frees us from the bondage of worry and fear about what to do in every situation. When we know His Word, He will guide us. Many times, our biggest problem is that we don’t know the Word well, so struggle to call God’s truth to mind in difficult moments. This passage encourages us to dig deep into the Word and remain steadfast in our study of it. We always have room to grow. Jesus told His disciples to “continue” in the Word—this means reading, practicing, studying, and living it out. God’s Word is our guide and His gracious blessing to show us clearly who He is and who we are as His people.

Hebrews 13:7-8 says, “Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their way of life, imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever.” If you struggle to read the Word or know how to study it, you are not alone. Remember those people who have encouraged you in your faith and seek out a mentor or friend to study the Word alongside. Even as situations in life feel especially isolating, we can hold to the truth that God has given us an unchanging hope in Jesus and the body of believers to remind us of the truth in His Word.

• What does your time studying the Word of God look like? How would you like to grow in it?
• Who has encouraged you in your faith through the Word?
• Pray and praise God for giving us such clear direction and truth in the Word so that we can know our Savior Jesus and who He has called us to be.
