Monday, January 2 – James 1:5

Jan 1, 2023

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Have you ever found yourself facing a trial and not knowing what to do next? James encourages Christians to consider it joy when we face trials (see 1:2), but instead of encouraging us to have blind joy, he reminded us of who we could go to in our trials. As we look to the new year, we may have many dreams, resolutions, and goals for the year. We will also face trials, make decisions, and experience difficulties. In good times and bad, we can seek the One who gives wisdom generously. We can look at the His Word when searching our hearts for areas where we need to grow. We receive comfort from the Holy Spirit when we face times of loneliness, and we have hope for the days ahead even when things aren’t going our way because we know His hope endures past this fleeting moment.

You probably have expectations for the year ahead. So, as you make decisions about what things you will pursue or resolutions you will make, seek wisdom from God. In Him, you will find hope when faced with the curveballs of life and direction for the ways He wants to work and use you to bring others to reconciliation with Him. Your plans for your life may seem grand but seeking God’s wisdom as you plan is even grander. You may have a picture of what you think will be best for you, but He knows how to work in you, comfort you, and grow you unlike anyone else. Seek Him with all you have in the year to come.

  • What are some areas where you need to seek God’s wisdom?
  • What are some plans you have for the year to come? What would it look like to seek God’s wisdom in those plans?
  • Pray and bring your plans before God. Ask Him for wisdom as you make these plans.
