Monday, July 17 – Acts 20:17-21

Jul 16, 2023

From Miletus he sent word to Ephesus and called to himself the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them,“You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and trials which came upon me through the plots of the Jews; how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was beneficial, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Have you ever heard someone share a testimony about how God was with them through a tough time? These testimonies are often powerful for many reasons. One reason is the perseverance of faith. We are tempted to shrink back in our faith when things get inconvenient, let alone difficult. But hearing about the ways someone grew in his or her relationship with God even through trials gives us hope.

Paul reminded the elders of the church in Ephesus of the legacy he had established. He remained faithful to the gospel even amid trials. He stayed steadfast in Christ, serving the Lord with humility through it all. Paul’s words beg a few questions of application: What kind of legacy are we leaving? What kind of testimony can we share? Are we people who give witness to a faithful God during difficult times? Are we quick to ask God why in a frustrating moment or do we walk humbly before Him no matter the circumstances? God has given you a unique testimony to share. The difficult moments in life do not have to be reasons you walk away from God but can build a legacy of His steadfastness in your life in every circumstance. May our testimony be as Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, “And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in distresses, in persecutions, in difficulties, in behalf of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.”

  • Who has shown you how to walk with God in trials?
  • What are some trials you have faced? How did you handle them? Where do you typically turn in these moments?
  • Pray and ask God to help you remain steadfast in your faith when you encounter difficult or even inconvenient circumstances.
