Monday, June 19 – Proverbs 3:11-12

Jun 18, 2023

My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord or loathe His rebuke, for whom the Lord loves He disciplines, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.

In most areas of responsibility, we enjoy certain aspects and loathe others. Even if we don’t enjoy a responsibility, it’s important. Most parents enjoy many aspects of parenting, but discipline is often not one of them. Appropriate discipline requires a difficult balance between learning to discern the truth, recognizing how a child best receives instruction, and giving grace when children fail. As difficult as this aspect of parenting is, it is critical to keeping children safe and help them learn about life outside of their limited perspective and experience. Discipline is necessary because each of us is born with a sinful nature that only looks out for our own interests. When we look back on our fondest memories with our parents, moments of discipline are not likely at the top of our list, but they are necessary for growing and maturing.

This passage reminds us we don’t have to loathe discipline because it is a tool that trains us to grow in life. When we face discipline as children of God, we’re trained up in God’s image. This passage clearly shows us the Lord loves and delights in those He disciplines. We’re motivated to discipline our children out of our love for them. Through discipline, we seek to cultivate the image of God within our children, and He does the same—but perfectly—for all who belong to Him. Discipline of children isn’t a measure of control meant to place us in power; it’s a tool to grow ourselves and others into the fullness of life with God!

  • What has been your view of discipline between a parent and a child? What are some broken ideas we have about discipline?
  • How has God used discipline for your life for your benefit?
  • Pray and thank God for the way He has used discipline to shape you in the image of Jesus.
