Monday, May 8 – Revelation 21:8

May 7, 2023

“But for the cowardly, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and sexually immoral persons, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Have you ever tried to take justice into your own hands? There are some things we see in the world that infuriate us to the point of wanting to make things right in the way we see fit. This can be as simple as giving someone a piece of our mind or as brash as physically assaulting someone. This passage reminds Christ followers that, ultimately, justice is in the Lord’s hands. The brokenness of the world angers God more than it angers us. He is gracious, but He will not let the guilty go free. Only through the transforming work of Jesus through the Holy Spirit can people be truly forgiven.

What is our place then when we see things that are not as they should be, when we feel tempted to take rejection of Christ personally or to take justice into our own hands? We are called to remember who is on the throne. God has ultimate authority, and we can trust His hand in all situations. We can hold that our God is just, He will carry out His justice in the end, even if we don’t see it at this moment. Psalm 89:14 says, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; mercy and truth go before You.” Those who follow Jesus have the promise of eternal life in Him, and we don’t have to carry the weight of justice because He has taken that load. We can share hope with others, not fearing rejection, trusting that He will bring all things together in His time.

  • When have you tried to take justice into your own hands?
  • What would it look like to trust God and His justice in these moments?
  • Pray and ask God to help you remember His sovereignty when you desire to take justice into your own hands.
