Thursday, April 20 – Daniel 3:16-18

Apr 19, 2023

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego replied to the king, “Nebuchadnezzar, we are not in need of an answer to give you concerning this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods nor worship the golden statue that you have set up.”

Have you ever had to defend your faith? At times we expect opposition, but in other moments it catches us completely off guard. In the heat of the moment, it is easy to get caught up in our emotions, acting according to our anger or fear instead of according to Scripture or how God leads us to respond by His Spirit. Second Timothy 1:7-8 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God.” When we follow the direction of the Holy Spirit, we will react differently when we are pressed in our faith. Instead of responding in fear, we will have the strength like the men in Daniel 3 to stand up for the call of Christ with love. When we have God’s Spirit at work in us, we will have the boldness to stand up for our faith with love and clarity even when it is costly. We can gladly join in suffering, knowing the true power of our God.

There are many things that lead us toward fear—things we see in the world, stories we hear from others or on the news, and so many other instances—but as followers of Jesus, we have the Holy Spirit, our calling is clear, our hope is secure, and regardless of the cost to our lives, we can lovingly and respectfully stand up for our faith when opposition arises.

  • When have you defended your faith? What was that experience like?
  • What would it look like to seek the Holy Spirit when you face conflict instead of responding according to your own instincts?
  • Pray and ask God to give you boldness when you face opposition for your faith.
