Thursday, April 27 – Psalm 68:5-6

Apr 26, 2023

A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows,

Is God in His holy dwelling.

God makes a home for the lonely;

He leads out the prisoners into prosperity,

Only the rebellious live in parched lands.

Do you consider yourself detail-oriented? If you are detail-oriented, you may easily notice when one thing is out of place or a spelling error in a book. Sometimes when we see the brokenness of the world, it may seem like God is distant, and we might question if He knows or cares about the details around us. Today’s passage reminds us that He not only notices the problems in the world, but He also has a heart for those we often overlook. He cares for those who cannot care for themselves.

There are people in need all around us—the foster child, the widow, the modern-day slave. It is often easier to stay in our comfort zone instead of going to the places where we see these problems clearly or taking the time to serve with a group that addresses these issues head-on. Praise God that He is faithful to enter into the mess of life. He is a Father to the fatherless and a Judge for widows—He loves people and wants them restored to Him. When we are after His heart, we will have opportunities to see people’s hurts and notice those we have overlooked. Through Him, we are equipped to love people in times of loneliness, helplessness, and distress.

  • What are some issues in the world you have noticed? What are some areas of need in the world that you are prone to overlook?
  • How are you encouraged that God cares for people in messy places? How can you reflect His heart in caring for others?
  • Pray and ask God to care for the orphan, widow, and oppressed. Ask Him to open your eyes to opportunities to join Him in this work.
