Thursday, August 31 – Joshua 3:14-16

So when the people set out from their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant before the people, and when those who were carrying the ark came up to the Jordan and the feet of the priests carrying the ark stepped down into the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks all the days of harvest), then the waters which were flowing down from above stood and rose up in one heap, a great distance away at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those which were flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. So the people crossed opposite Jericho.

When was a time you expected God to show up in a big way? God certainly showed up for the Israelites as they headed for the promised land. This passage is amazing not only because of what God did but also because of the faith the Israelites displayed in Him to do so. They brought the Ark of the Covenant to the edge of the water, ready for God to pave the way before them. To many this would have looked crazy, taking something so valuable to the people to the edge of the water, where the ground was less secure, where it could get swept away, where it might be damaged. Still, the people listened to God’s instruction, allowing Him to go before them, trusting that He would make a way.

We often tell ourselves God can do anything, which is true, but it is hard to take a leap of faith and act expecting Him to move. This may include giving generously when we are just making ends meet, sharing the gospel with people we are confident will reject it, or even show up on Sunday morning ready to worship God and see His Spirit at work. Trusting God means sometimes we must take that first step that may seem crazy, believing He will pave the way before us. Even better than that, His Spirit is alive in us and guides us along the way so we don’t take any steps alone.

  • What are some things God has prompted you to do? How did you feel at that moment? How did you respond?
  • Do you regularly expect God to move on your behalf? Why or why not?
  • Pray and ask God to help you grow to expect Him to move in a powerful way in your everyday life.
