I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.

Have you ever worked to teach someone something and then recognized the moment they got it? Whether you are teaching a child how to ride a bike or how to complete a math problem, a moment comes when they shift from hearing what you are saying to understanding it. All of us have experienced this either as the one teaching or the one receiving instruction. This moment is not only amazing for the student, but it is also a blessing to the teacher! It shows the teacher that his or her hard work and patience have paid off.

Many things don’t come naturally to us, and following Jesus is one of them. Because of our fallen nature, we all want to go our own way, often reacting in conflict instead of responding in grace. The list goes on and on. Paul wrote in Galatians 6:9-10, “Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let’s do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.” Let’s heed this calling, diligently pouring into the next generation and showing them the truth, grace, and love in Christ with the hope that we will share in the joy of seeing them walk in the truth.

  • What are some things you’ve tried to teach another person? Do you typically find this process enjoyable or difficult? Why?
  • Who are some people you can pour into spiritually? How do you need to act in this regard?
  • Pray that God would equip you to pour into the next generation, showing them the truth found in Him.
