Thursday, May 11 – Revelation 21:22-27

May 10, 2023

I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed; and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

There are things you need for some seasons of the year but not for others. In the winter you need a jacket, and in the summer, you need clothes that help you stay cool. It is not often that you need a jacket in the summer or need to cool off in the winter. For each season, different provisions are necessary. On earth, we need many different provisions for life. Our world is fallen, and the effects of that reality run far and wide. God’s coming restoration will be so full that John said we will not even have need for the sun or the moon. Truly, this is unimaginable in our experience. In God’s full restoration, He will provide everything.

We get to experience many wonderful things in life that serve as shadows of the beauty that awaits followers of Jesus. Colossians 3:2-4 says, “Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.” Take heed of this call, living for eternal hope instead of the temporary things of this life.

  • What aspect of this passage excites you most? Which challenges you most?
  • How should knowing the hope of God’s full restoration change the way you live now?
  • Pray and thank God for the eternal hope He has provided through Jesus.
