Thursday, October 26 – 1 John 3:18

Oct 25, 2023

Little children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

We use the word hypocrite to describe how someone who says one thing but does another. This hurts others and typically reflects selfishness. This person pretends to be someone he or she is not. But Scripture takes the call of living out one’s faith very seriously. Service is more than what we do to help during times when the church gathers; it is the way we live behind closed doors, in our workplace, in our homes, and in time alone. We are to love in action and in accordance with the truth of God’s Word.

A life of service is not glamorous. It is cooking a meal for your spouse who has had a long day when you don’t feel up for it. It is going out of your way to clean up the common workspace when no one is looking. When we authentically serve and love in deed and truth out of the abundance of our relationship with God, we display Christ-like love to others. These small acts may seem insignificant to us, but in the long run, they are our testimony and evidence of Christ to a world that does not know Him. First John 3:23-24 says, “This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments remains in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He remains in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”

  • In what areas of your life is it most difficult to love in deed and truth?
  • How have you seen others love in deed and truth?
  • Pray and ask God to fill you with His Spirit and equip you to love others in deed and truth.
