Tuesday, December 26 – Luke 1:26-33
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was very perplexed at this statement, and was pondering what kind of greeting this was. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
After Christmas, we often look to the new year, considering changes we want to make and who we want to be in the year to come. Many people choose a word of significance for the year or make resolutions for the things they want to change. But we don’t have to reach far back into our memory to recognize things don’t always turn out how we plan, and sometimes a year looks totally different than what we expect on New Year’s Day.
In this passage, Mary’s life changed in ways she could have never foreseen. She didn’t have to seek out significance or wonder about her purpose because God directed her to it. She certainly didn’t have a guide for how to handle this completely unique situation. What if we first looked to God for our purpose and significance this New Year? What if we asked Him what needs to change in our hearts before we made decisions on what will be best in the year to come? Our plans don’t matter if we don’t have Him. But with Him we can be sure we are in the right place, no matter where our year goes.
- How have you looked to God to find your purpose or significance? What difference does that make?
- What are other things you are prone to look to for purpose or fulfillment?
- Pray and ask God to direct you in this year to come. Ask Him to show you your purpose in Him in 2024.
