Tuesday, November 29 – Matthew 1:20-21

But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Something powerful happens when someone calls you by name. This is not something we expect from a stranger; it is a sign of familiarity and, at times, intimacy. Someone knowing our families, our lineages, or our family names indicates a deeper relationship. God knew what Joseph was going through, and He knew exactly how to address it with Him. God sent an angel to call Joseph by name and address what he was wrestling with privately.

We often face situations that burdens us. We mull over what to do, unsatisfied with the answers that come to mind. In Joseph’s careful thought over this burdensome situation, he allowed space for God to step in and speak to him. Joseph was truly seeking wisdom in his situation, not just a quick fix. Do you believe God can speak to the burdens in your life? Do you lift to Him the situations that weigh down your heart with despair? Romans 8:25-27 says, “But if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it. Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

As we wrestle with heartaches and seek what to do in the difficult situations in our lives, we can hold onto our greater hope. We have hope that in Christ all things—big and small—are taken care of. God has the ultimate victory and even amid our everyday struggles, He is attentive and at work, often in ways we cannot see.

  • Do you trust God to give direction in the situations of your life? Why or why not?
  • What do you have going on that you have not shared with others and need to lift up to God today?
  • Praise God that He hears the groanings of our hearts when we come to Him.
