And he wrote there on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which he had written, in the presence of the sons of Israel.

Imagine that you had the time and capacity to read a library’s worth of books. You would learn many things to share with others and be one of the most well-educated people in every circle you entered. But this kind of learning also has its limitations. We often call that kind of knowledge “book smarts.” We recognize that even with all that information, we would not necessarily know more about how to live practically. The Bible is more than just a book on the bookshelf—more than just a textbook on good morals or an instruction manual on how to live. It is the living and active Word of God that shows us the way to life and how to live each day. It teaches us the why; it shows us the how; and it directs us to the One who made this life with God possible: Jesus.

When Joshua wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, it was more than a list of rules to follow but a reminder of who God is and what it looked like to have life in Him. The people of Israel did not use God only for victory but sought to anchor themselves in His truth to remind themselves of who He was and what He had done. God wants to do more in our lives than merely give us wins or lead us to successful ministry. He wants to give us life! The question is, will we anchor ourselves in His truth or will we go back to living life on our own terms? God said in Joshua 1:8-9, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will achieve success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified nor dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” He gives the key to life. Why would we seek anything else?

  • What place does the Word of God have in your life? Why?
  • When was a time you were most immersed in the Word of God? How did this shape your life during that time?
  • Pray and ask God to give you a hunger for His Word every day.
