Wednesday, December 7 – Luke 2:16-19

And they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. When they had seen Him, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it were amazed about the things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.

What are some things in life that give you room for pause and awe? For some, it is the simplicity of being out in nature and watching creation at work, for others it is watching someone learn a new skill for the first time. Unfortunately, these moments of pause are few and far between. In the holiday season, our calendars fill with things to do and places to go with little time left to pause or ponder.

This moment in Mary’s life was not a matter of having enough time to stop and look around but a choice she made to intentionally take in the moment she was given. Instead of moving on to the next thing, Mary recognized God at work in the moment. These moments were a treasure because they were evidence of God’s hand and the beginning of the fulfillment of the prophecy she was given. Do we consider the moments we see God at work as precious? Do we live expectantly of His work in our everyday lives? Mary’s hope grew from the moment she received the prophecy about Jesus, blossoming into a life of expectancy to see Him at work. May we have that same anticipation and hope in our lives, trusting that God will work in all things. Let’s pause when we recognize Him working, truly treasuring Him above all else.

  • Where have you recently seen God at work? What happened?
  • What would it look like to live with expectancy and hope for God to work in your life daily?
  • Pray and ask God to help you recognize Him at work in life and praise Him when you do.
