Wednesday, September 20 – Joshua 6:16

Sep 19, 2023

And at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city.”

Self-talk is a formative element of how we think about ourselves and how we see the world. If we continually tell ourselves about how hard life is, we quickly become overwhelmed. If we have an attitude of self-loathing, it is hard to ever see ourselves in a positive light, even when we do something right. This cry of the people was a declaration to Jericho but also a reminder for the people. It was a declaration of and praise to God in the victory, reminding them His power had brought them to this point.

What would it look like if we declared God’s victory in our lives in the big and small moments? We would probably recognize Him at work more instead of taking credit for ourselves, but we would also grow an expectation of His power in the battles to come. Ephesians 6:10-12 says “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” We can take encouragement in our times of hardship, not because of our own power, but in the Lord and the strength of His might. As we continually dwell on His praise and greatness we will be prepared for the spiritual battles of life.

  • What are some occasions when you praise God?
  • When do you struggle to praise God? What are some occasions where you are tempted to blame Him?
  • Pray and ask God to help you recognize the moments you have to praise Him.
