Friday, May 5 – Colossians 2:14-15

May 4, 2023

Having canceled the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.

Success often extends beyond one moment. If your team wins several games, you have the opportunity to go to the championship. If you start to do well in your job, you may receive a promotion. We may be very familiar with the gospel message, know it to be true, and even how to share it with others but forget the implications of Jesus’s victory in our everyday lives.

When Jesus died on the cross and rose again, He took the punishment for our sins and provided us victory over it! He has freed us from the things that burdened us. He took our sin away, never to bind us anymore. Paul said in Romans 12:1, “Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” Because of the mercy that has been poured out for us, we can live for Him. We have purpose that is not based only on what we think is important but on a deeper eternal meaning given by God. We are not just freed from our old ways but freed to live for Him! Whether you are looking for a purpose in your job, sports, family position, or something else, if you are a follower of Jesus, all those things are secondary in light of who you are in Him. You are a living sacrifice called to live through the power of the Holy Spirit and for His glory in all that you do. This is a high and precious calling!

  • How has following Jesus changed your perspective on your purpose in life?
  • Have you surrendered your life to Jesus as a living sacrifice, ready to go where He calls you and look for where He leads you? How do you need to respond to Him today?
  • Praise God for His victory over your sin that enables you to live for Him.
