Friday, November 24 – Joshua 23:15-16

Nov 23, 2023

“But it will come about that just as all the good words which the Lord your God spoke to you have come upon you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the warnings, until He has eliminated you from this good land which the Lord your God has given you. When you violate the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land which He has given you.”

We love that God is faithful, He has ultimate power and keeps His promises. This is a true and wonderful thing. We hold onto that hope in times of trouble and loneliness. Yet we want to forget some of His promises. We want to forget a life apart from Him is a life of destruction. We want to pretend like no consequences will come if we start to walk away from Him or choose to live like the world around us. Just as we have to hold onto the promises of His presence in the hard moments of life, we have to believe the warnings He has given. We may be to believe there will be a neutral ground and we can take our faith lightly, but over and over in Scripture we see that following God is more than the things you say—it is about a life of surrender to His way and direction.

Jesus said in John 15:4-6, “Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.” This call to follow Jesus has beautiful promises and difficult ones. We cannot receive one and ignore the other. When we are in Him, we live as God designed it to be but when we live apart from Him there will be disappointment and destruction in the end.

  • Where is God calling you to take your walk with Him more seriously?
  • What are some promises of God you wrestle with?
  • Pray and ask God to help you stay in His presence, understanding that apart from Him you can do nothing. Repent for the times you have tried to live life on your terms.
