How lovely are Your dwelling places, Lord of armies!

If you could go anywhere right now, at this moment, where would you go? There is something beautiful about visiting a place you love. We can recognize the smell as soon as we step through the door of a grandparent’s house, or we get excited at the first sight of the ocean on a trip to the beach. Different places are special to each of us.

For the psalmist, the dwelling place of the Lord was more than just a place of worship; it was a beautiful place because it was where he got to be with God. So, as he approached Jerusalem and saw the temple, he sang about his excitement. Maybe one of those places you love is special because you remember how you have had a deep spiritual moment there during a retreat or vacation. For the psalmist, his desire to be here wasn’t about beautiful landscaping or time with friends—he wanted to be with the Lord. He treasured the place where he would meet with God: the temple.

Now, as followers of Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives inside of us. We are called the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)—God’s dwelling place is with us, in us! We don’t have to go on a journey or even drive our cars to church to meet with God: He is alive in us when we surrender to Him. Because God lives in us, our lives change when we become His. We no longer live for ourselves, looking for the places we want to go or the things we want to do. Instead, we look to Him as our Shepherd, Provider, and Guide at every step of our lives. We can look to Him and cry out to Him right where we are, whether we are in the middle of a fast-food restaurant or alone in the pit of despair. He is the God who hears and is ready to dwell in us when we surrender to Him.

  • How often are you reminded that God lives inside you as a follower of Jesus?
  • Do you crave being with God? Why or why not?
  • Pray and ask God for a deeper desire to be close to Him and remember His Spirit that lives inside you.
