Tuesday, January 9 – Psalm 84:2
My soul longed and even yearned for the courtyards of the Lord;
My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.
What do you want more than anything in the world? We all have hopes, desires, and dreams. Some of them we know we can accomplish, and others feel just out of reach. At his core, the psalmist desired to be with God. Every aspect of his being: his soul, his heart, his flesh, desired and took joy in God. Have you ever met someone who loved God that much?
What is special about this desire is that it lasts into eternity and can be satisfied. So many of our desires are about temporary things or events that may or may not take place. We hope for that job promotion, that accomplishment, that house, and then we think we will have what we want. But another thing always comes right after it, trapping us in a cycle of feeling empty and chasing the bigger and better thing. In God, we have the biggest and the best thing—we don’t have to chase after what we think we need because He will supply all we need. We don’t have to focus on all the things that we want because we know our greatest desires can be satisfied in Him. We don’t have to look to other people for approval because we know He loves and cares for us.
Even in the hard places of life, we can look to God as our greatest desire, knowing this life is not the one we live for. We anticipate with hope eternity with Him. May God shape our hearts so that our souls seek Him above all. As Colossians 3:1-2 says, “Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.”
- Have you ever had a time in your life when you deeply desired to be close to God? What was that like? How did that change how you lived?
- What would it look like to seek things that are above? How would that be different from the way you are living today?
- Pray and ask God to grow in you a greater desire for Him.
