So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

In our culture, every person has a first name and a last name. Our first names are often uniquely our own, selected by our parents but we do not choose our last names for ourselves. These names are with us through life to let people know the families we come from. Depending on family histories or who you speak to, last names can carry weight of influence, pride, or shame. Our last names also serves as a reminder that even as we live in an individualistic culture and may go our own direction, part of our identity is always tied to our families.

When God made humans, He made us in His image to reflect who He is for His purpose. This is a very countercultural worldview. From a young age, we are encouraged to find our own voice and our own way in life to decide who we want to be. Yet when we look at Scripture, we see that who we are is always connected to who God is. He is the foundation, the Creator, the Definer, and Sustainer of life.

When we face questions about who we are and who we are meant to be, we need look no further than our heavenly Father. Our gender, nationality, and background are unique pieces of our testimony, but our true identity is rooted in our Creator. He has given us everything needed to know Him and to know who we are and are meant to be through the work of His Son, the guidance of His Word, and by the power of His Holy Spirit.

  • What are some things you have learned about yourself in connection to God?
  • Where do you go when you have questions about who you are and who you are meant to be?
  • Pray and ask God to help you build your worldview based on Him.
