Monday, October 2 – Joshua 8:1-2

Oct 1, 2023

Now the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear or be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you. Arise, go up to Ai; see, I have handed over to you the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. You shall do to Ai and its king just as you did to Jericho and its king; you shall take only its spoils and its cattle as plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

Have you ever needed to restart after experiencing a difficult defeat? Maybe you had to get back into the game after getting hurt or go to work after a difficult conversation. It would be easy to become fixated on the loss, get frustrated with the past, and allow the loss to linger. In today’s passage, after a humiliating defeat, the Lord called His people back to face the people they had been defeated by. Not only that, but He also called them to go into the battle without fear or dismay. Here we are reminded that God knows our inclinations! He knows we often walk in fear after defeat and tend to keep our heads down after we experience loss.

While our circumstances are quite different, we have the same call as the Israelites today: remain confident in God and His promises! The Israelites experienced defeat because they had been tainted by choosing their own way instead of the Lord’s. In this battle, the Lord made it clear, He was going to be the One who did the work. He said, “I have handed over to you” (v. 1). Before they had stepped foot into battle, God had paved the way. There was no reason to be afraid or dismayed. We may be afraid of walking back into difficult conversations when we have been rejected for our faith. Many times, we start a new morning of parenting defeated after a long night of fighting. We need the same message God had for the Israelites, “Do not fear or be dismayed” (v. 1). God is with us in the battle, and He goes before us no matter what we may face.

  • When have you been overcome with defeat?
  • What are some promises of God you need to hold on to in the moments you feel defeated?
  • Pray and ask God to guide and encourage you in His truth and promises.
