Tuesday, October 3 – Joshua 8:3,6-7

Oct 2, 2023

So Joshua rose up with all the people of war to go up to Ai; and Joshua chose thirty thousand men, valiant warriors, and sent them out at night.

“They will come out after us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeing before us just as they did the first time.’ So we will flee before them. Then you shall rise from your ambush and take possession of the city, for the Lord your God will hand it over to you.”

In any team competition, strategy is important. It helps keep the team focused on the goal and how to achieve it. It keeps in mind the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team and focuses on using your strengths to win. The strength of Israel was the Lord, who went before them. Their entire strategy depended on Him and the work He was doing. So many times, we build strategies that completely depend on our own ability and strength. Inevitably, our efforts fail or do not satisfy as we thought they would. In any dream, ambition, difficult battle, or even an ordinary day, we need the Lord to go before us. He is the One who has the strategy, the strength, and the power to do things that we can’t.

What are some plans you have made for yourself that you need to surrender to Him? When we surrender our ideas and our plans to Him, asking for His guidance, He is faithful to give it. He gives us boldness when we don’t know what to say; He gives us strength when we feel defeated; and He gives us His peace when we are anxious. Our human intuition tells us we should be guided by our feelings and our own knowledge, but in Christ, there is a much better strategy for life: We can abide in His presence through the power of the Holy Spirit, be guided by His Word, and live with Him as He intended from the very beginning.

  • Who or what do you usually rely on when faced with a difficult moment?
  • When have you depended on God’s strength and strategies over your own? What happened?
  • Pray and ask God to help you seek His way instead of your own.
