Thursday, June 15 – Acts 16:32-33

Jun 14, 2023

And they spoke the word of God to him together with all who were in his house. And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.

Do you ever struggle with Jesus’s call on your life to go and make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20)? If so, you’re certainly not alone. And if any of us were to read Acts 16:32-33 without also reading the verses that come before them, we might mistakenly believe it’s a simple task that regular people like us are clearly not prepared, equipped, or able to do. But, as they say, context is everything.

Paul and Silas didn’t just knock on someone’s door, start sharing the gospel, and then baptize an entire family. This was no cold call. There was an arrest, beatings, imprisonment, and voiced prayers and worship songs that preceded their visit to this home. Paul and Silas had come to the jailer’s rescue at the lowest moment of his life. Their faithfulness had saved him from execution. Then they shared Christ with him, which would save his life for eternity.

Those who are overwhelmed by fears or a sense of personal failure need to discover the joy and peace Jesus gives those who believe in Him. Often, that discovery comes as people witness faithful living that supports the message of faith. Don’t miss the context of evangelism that is demonstrated throughout the New Testament. As we live faithfully in every circumstance, loving people the way Jesus did, gospel conversations will arise.

  • What opportunities might you currently have to help those who are overwhelmed by fear understand the joy and peace they can receive in Christ?
  • In what relationships do you avoid talk of Christ because you feel awkward or ill equipped? What can you learn from this passage? What will you do differently?
  • Praise God that the gospel is bigger than any obstacle that stands in its way and that it liberates us from bondage and fear to freedom and faith.
