Thursday, March 16 – Romans 12:1-2

Mar 15, 2023

Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Have you ever heard a child repeat a phrase you often use? These moments can surprise us or make us laugh because we are not always aware of what children absorb. Like children, there is so much in a day that we all absorb whether we recognize it or not. We read an article that informs our feelings about something going on in the world; we scroll through social media taking in the messages of comparison that pop into our heads; or we watch TV, subconsciously consuming the messages we watch. As adults, we often pride ourselves on self-awareness, but we aren’t often as aware as we like to think. When we look at Scripture, we see that we are called to lay down our lives at Jesus’s feet to be transformed by Him.

Matthew 7:3 says, “Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” So often there are logs in our eyes that we are not willing to recognize, let alone surrender to God. We absorb the information of the world, yet never notice how we are being formed by the messages we take in. The only way to truly know where we stand, to truly address sin issues and be transformed by God, is to present ourselves each day as a sacrifice to Him. Living as a sacrifice is not easy. It is easier to try and see around the logs in our eyes, but God has a better plan for us. While we might settle for mere comfort or entertainment, He requires our everything so that we can be completely reconciled with Him and see life as He intended.

  • When have you realized you were being influenced by someone or something you didn’t expect?
  • What would it look like to present yourself as a living sacrifice to God each day?
  • Pray, seeking to present yourself as a sacrifice to God. Ask Him to reveal the areas you have been conformed to the world.
