Thursday, November 30 – Joshua 24:24-28
And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey His voice.” So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. Then Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, because it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us; so it shall be a witness against you, so that you do not deny your God.” Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to his inheritance.
When was a time you put something off? Sometimes the decision-making process is easy, we know what we want to do, but we struggle to take the first step to make it happen.
Israel insisted that they wanted to serve the Lord—that was the resolve of their mouths, and Joshua led the people to take the first step to write it on their hearts. This was meant to be a moment they would remember for years and generations to come. The first step in faith and surrender to God is often difficult. It is easier to talk about than actually implement in our lives. Following the Lord truly is never done halfheartedly, and it’s not only done with words. Romans 12:1-2 says, “Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Making a commitment to the Lord means taking the step to surrender your life in every way, asking Him to transform your hearts and desires. What would it look like to take that next step today in your faith? Do you need to back up your surrender with your actions? Do you need to create a physical reminder to help you remember what you have been called to? Choose today who you will serve and how your life needs to be different because of Him.
