Wednesday, November 29 – Joshua 24:15

Nov 28, 2023

“But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

What is an important decision you made that changed the trajectory of your life? Maybe you chose to go to college, to get married, or to move to a new place. These decisions are life-changing ones that affect many smaller decisions you make. They are formative and shift the lens you see the world through. Joshua was calling the people to make a deep, formative decision. This was a decision each person or at least each family had to make that would shift the trajectory and legacy they would leave. They could choose to serve the Lord or serve the way they had seen their families do. They could serve the Lord or follow the gods that were popular around them. Following God meant, truly, to be set apart from their history and their surroundings.

The call for us is the same. Will you choose today to serve the Lord? This will look different than some of the things your family did. This will look different than the way the people around us live. First Peter 2:9-10 says, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” When we commit our lives to following the Lord, our whole perspective changes—it starts to shift what we do, from the big decisions of what job will we have to the small decisions of who we will speak to in each moment. Following Jesus shapes our lives and our families, leaving a legacy pointing to the Lord as the way to true life.

  • What are some smaller decisions that are affected when you choose to follow the Lord?
  • How would your life change if you resolved to follow the Lord in every area of your life? What would stay the same?
  • Pray and ask God to help you live for Him and His calling.
