Tuesday, November 28 – Joshua 24:14

Nov 27, 2023

“Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and do away with the gods which your fathers served beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.”

Many of us don’t want to be like our parents in one way or another. The irony is many of us become exactly like our parents in the areas we dislike the most. Why? Because it is what we know. It is difficult to do something we have never done or seen, so we often follow well-worn paths; we choose the path of least resistance or the way that is familiar to us. Our parents set an example for us and shaped the way we see life. For better or worse, it is familiar to us. The Israelites had seen God work time and again, but they also had a history of seeing past generations serve different gods. Joshua made it clear, a call to fear the Lord and serve Him was in opposition to serving the gods of Egypt. The people needed to step away from the sinful patterns they had known and seen before.

We also have patterns of past generations that are not Christ-like. Following the Lord in sincerity and truth means stepping away from those ways of life that feel all too natural to us, those sin patterns that have enslaved the generations before us. Jesus said to his disciples in Luke 14:26, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.” Jesus was not setting out to create family strife but calling His followers to put away what was familiar and trust Him primarily.

  • What are some habits from your family of origin that are familiar but do not reflect Christ?
  • Why is it often difficult for us to do something different from what is familiar?
  • Pray and ask God to reveal any patterns of sin in your heart.
