Wednesday, May 3 – Colossians 2:9-12

May 2, 2023

For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over every ruler and authority; and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision performed without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

At some point in life, we all ask ourselves the question, “Who am I?” This question gets at more than just our physical makeup; it is a deeper question of purpose. Certain things may give us small inclinations of an answer like our interests, talents, or family history, but none of these give the full answer we seek. This passage tells us that we have been made complete in Jesus. All our searching for purpose and meaning in our lives can be answered in Him.

Think about the different “hats” you wear in a day: student, teacher, parent, child, boss, employee. When these roles are informed by how Christ has changed your life, you will live out those roles differently. Because He completes us, we don’t have to find our fulfillment and joy in any role but in Him. And when we put Him in the proper place in our lives, we experience purpose even in the most difficult circumstances. Paul said in Acts 20:24, “But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of God’s grace.” Paul frequently found himself without a home, comfort, or freedom from prison, but even in the times of greatest sacrifice, he found his identity in Christ who gave him everything needed for joy and purpose.

  • Where have you searched for your purpose outside of Jesus?
  • How has purpose in Christ changed how you live?
  • Pray for the graduating seniors in our church, and ask God to help them remember that they are complete in Him.
