Wednesday, November 8 – Joshua 14:13-14

Nov 7, 2023

So Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. Therefore, Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he followed the Lord God of Israel fully.

Have you ever seen the negative effects of being distracted while trying to do something? Maybe you were trying to cook while someone was talking, and you missed an important thing they said or something on the stove burned. We like to think we can multitask, but our multi-tasking abilities only take us so far. To do our best, we have to give our full attention and focus. Caleb followed the Lord fully throughout his life. His life was not marked by distractions and disbelief like the other Israelites. He knew life was to be lived with God, and he committed to that life fully. As a result, He got to experience life with God and additional earthly blessings.

Many of us live with a distracted faith. God has part of our attention, but we resist following Him wholeheartedly. We want to make some decisions on our own for our own reasons, comfort, and convenience. We tell ourselves that we know what is best, but we miss out on the blessing of living in surrender to God. Our faith will never thrive when we live it out half-heartedly and only where it is convenient. Our walk with Jesus should affect all areas of life, in secret and in public, from our conversations at work to the way we do our finances. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” A life of full surrender is a great blessing. Like Caleb, when we are following God, He will direct our paths, and He will give us joy, purpose, and comfort, even in life’s struggles.

  • What are some distractions in your faith life?
  • What would it look like to live whole-heartedly for God? What would change? What would be the same?
  • Pray and surrender to God whole-heartedly.
