Tuesday, January 2 – Psalm 90:3-4

Jan 1, 2024

You turn mortals back into dust and say, “Return, you sons of mankind.” For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it passes by, or like a watch in the night.

Our end is not something many of us like to think about. It is humbling and scary to know we all will die one day. We often want to avoid that reality, but Moses confronted this reality head-on. He understood it not as something to fear but as something that gave him perspective on who God is. Over time, it can be easy to think we know what is best for our lives. We know what decisions feel right or what we want to do in any given situation, but this psalm is a reminder that our life is short and only God is everlasting.

When a child complains that five minutes feels like “forever,” we may be humored by their short perspective of time. As adults, a day, week, or even a year can feel like it flew by. We say things like, “Where did the time go?” The same span that feels everlasting to a child is but a moment to an adult. A thousand years feels like so long to us because they span multiple lifetimes on earth. We can’t even comprehend that amount of time, and yet according to God’s perspective, it is but a moment. When we get caught up in our own perspective of time, we can be like the child, complaining when we don’t get what we want right away. Recognizing God’s perspective on time reminds us He is in control. We ask children to trust us in matters they can’t understand because we have more experience and wisdom than them. And our wisdom and experience are nothing compared to God’s. We can trust Him and His design for our lives because He is from everlasting to everlasting.

  • When has it been difficult for you to trust God’s direction for your life?
  • Why do you think we sometimes get caught up in thinking we know better than God about life?
  • Pray and surrender this new year to God and ask Him to help you trust Him in the areas it is difficult.
